Eugene Chadbourne, der in Colorado und Alberta aufwuchs, ist als Musiker Autodidakt. Er spielte zunächst Rock and Roll-Gitarre, wurde aber bald durch die formalen Konventionen des Genres abgestoßen. Er beschäftigte sich mit anderen Stilen, von Blues über Country und Bluegrass bis hin zu Free Jazz und Noise – um letztlich diese Einflüsse in einem einzigartigen Stil zusammen-zuführen.
Dabei war er auch durch Stilexperimente von Captain Beefheart und den Mothers of Invention beeinflusst.Chadbourne arbeitete Ende der 1970er Jahre zunächst mit Carla Bley, John Zorn, Frank Lowe und Toshinori Kondo.
Er spielte Anfang der 1980er Jahre in der Gruppe Shockabilly mit Mark Kramer (Bass/Orgel) und David Licht (Drums), mit denen er vier Alben veröffentlichte.
Er trat weiterhin in sehr unterschiedlichen Kontexten auf, so mit Violent Femmes, Aki Takase, Billy Bang, Shelley Hirsch, Elliott Sharp oder Fred Frith, aber auch mit Improvisatoren
wie Derek Bailey, Jon Rose, Han Bennink, Tristan Honsinger, David Moss oder Paul Lovens.
Daneben spielte er mit Camper Van Beethoven, Andrea Centazzo, Jello Biafra, They Might Be Giants, Sun City Girls, Walter Daniels, Zu, Uli Böttcher und Jimmy Carl Black.
Chadbourne wohnt seit mehr als 20 Jahren in Greensboro (North Carolina). Er hat auch eigene Instrumente wie den „elektrischen Rechen“ entwickelt (an einen gewöhnlichen Gartenrechen wird ein Tonabnehmer befestigt, Luftballons verwendet er als Saitendämpfer), den er neben konventionellen Instrumenten wie Banjo und Gitarre spielt.
Live liebt man ihn für seine Faxen und durchgeknallt-hektische schrägen Songs und Cover! Ein hochsensibler, intelligenter und vielfältiger Musiker.
Konrad Sprenger is the pseudonym of Joerg Hiller, a composer, music producer and artist based in Berlin. He was born in 1977 in Lahr, Germany.
Hiller runs the Choose record label, for which he has produced recordings by artists Ellen Fullman, Arnold Dreyblatt, Robert Ashley and Terry Fox among others. Since 2000 Hiller regularly performs and works together with minimal music composer Arnold Dreyblatt and composer/ instrument builder Ellen Fullman, the bands Ethnostress and Ei and collaborates with the art collective Honey-Suckle Company.
His recent focus has been on live performance with a computer-controlled multi-channel electric guitar.
His music and installation work have been presented at Hamburger Bahnhof, Berghain, Gallery Giti Nourbakhsch, Podewil, Schaubühne, Pavillon der Volksbühne, Berlin; Badischer Kunstverein, Karlsruhe; Kunsthalle, Baden-Baden; Frankfurter Kunstverein; Künstlerhaus Stuttgart;
Kunsthalle Basel; MoMA PS1, New York; Cubitt Gallery, London; Sonar, Barcelona among others.
About the computer-controlled multi-channel electric guitar:
Konrad Sprenger explores rhythmic patterns based on the Euclidean algorithm, to evoke a kind of
cognitive insecurity through metrical dissonance.
Sprenger approaches the strings of the guitar as frequency generators, tuned and set into motion by various electronically controlled mechanical actions.
The music relates to the insistent rhythms of Minimalism, Krautrock and Techno,
and their shared focus on transcendence through propulsive, full-spectrum sound.
The custom-built instrument was conceived by Konrad Sprenger, and realized by Sukandar Kartadinata and Daniel van den Eijkel.
